The idea of a small jogging group came about through a (what was then) Bucks County Council initiative to encourage local communities to improve their health through participation in physical activity.
At the same time, an organisation called Active-In sourced a few volunteers to lead a small group of jogging residents around our local area, for what was intended to be a period of just six months or so. In the beginning few, if any, of the participants had ever thought about running before. Our first meeting was on a rainy October night in 2016 and people still showed up.
The popularity of those running nights grew. In June 2017 Hazlemere Runners was formally set up, initially offering regular beginners and improvers courses.
Hazlemere Runners is now formally affiliated to England Athletics and organised by a team of dedicated volunteers, who believe in active participation for all. These volunteers operate the Club Committee, work as Run Leaders, arrange and manage the free Couch to 5k beginners groups and, also, deliver open to the public races twice a year.
With over 200 members, the club continues to grow in size and experience.
What hasn’t changed is the club’s outlook:
To provide safe, supportive and inclusive running opportunities that improve the health and wellbeing of the community in High Wycombe.
This ethos continues to drive sustainable club development.
